Bushnell Laser Rangefinder Review and Field Tests

The unit debuted at the PGA Show in Orlando and The Hackers Paradise got a first look at it there. Here are some of the features we learned about at the show.

* LCD screen with backlight
* Easy to Use Interface, Distance at a Glance
* Distance to Center, Front, & Back
* Store up to 10 courses
* Bag/Belt clip
* Auto Shut off/ Sleep Mode After 30 Minutes
* Rechargeable Li-Ion battery
* Battery Life up to 15 hours
* USB PC interface for downloads

Overall, we think the Bushnell Yardage Pro is a step in the right direction for a company entering the GPS marketplace. They put out a high quality and extremely accurate GPS unit that will be perfect for golfers that play the same course all the time and really just need green distances. However if you play multiple or new courses frequently, you might want to wait for some of the other Bushnell GPS reviews before making your decision. You can read all about the Yardage Pro at their website Bushnell Golf Yardage Pro. This unit carries a MSRP of 9.99 and is available now.

The unit will only hold ten courses, but you can download a much larger number of courses to your computer for the subscription. The purchase price of the Yardage Pro is 0. This is a little higher than some other competitors base models, but low enough that it is still a very affordable price for incredible technology. The Neo, which is the little brother of the Yardage Pro, is only 0. It has fewer features, but is very similar to the Yardage Pro and is definitely worth considering if you need a more affordable alternative. If you find yourself spending large amounts of money on things like drivers, wedges, golf balls, or training aides, I suggest that you instead invest in a GPS unit like the Yardage Pro or Neo that is guaranteed to make you a better player right away. Knowing exact yardages speeds up play and makes you better no matter what level of player you are.

This handy rangefinder has a lot of good points and only one real failing as far as I can tell. So, if you are in the market for a medium priced laser rangefinder, you may indeed want to memorize the lengthy oficial nomenclature.

The >150 mode allows ranging objects that are at least 150 yards (or 165 meters) away through brush or other foreground clutter. The unit simply ignores anything closer than 150 yards. In this mode “>150″ appears in the LCD display. The >150 mode is selected by depressing the mode button once while looking through the monocular. Note that the Legend will return to the last setting selected each time that the unit is turned-on.

In use we found that the Legend worked exactly as described. It was easy to use and appeared to be quite accurate when we ranged the 100 and 200 yard target stands at our local rifle range. We also ranged a variety of other objects, including road signs, houses, trees, trees through intervening brush, fence posts, a couple of accommodating deer, and so on. We ranged in bright sunlight, under overcast conditions, and in the dim light 1/2 hour after sundown, when legal hunting ceases. All of the modes worked as advertised and no difficulties were encountered.

Some people wonder if having to look through the binoculars as opposed to looking down at a GPS unit is a disadvantage. For me it’s a non-issue in part because the LRF locks on target so quickly.
