Donald asks…

should I prefer to create sub domain to with old website or develop new site to target market in USA..?

Hi

I need advise from seo guru with god experience on this issue.

I want to target market in USA and want to appear on first page on Google with Geo graphical location to USA. The keywrods are very high competitive to achieve. I am little confused with website selection to target market in USA..

Consider the two sites

1. www.example1.com

This site has PR 5 but the language is Germany and geo graphical market is set to Germany. The major audience is also from germany.

2. www.example2.us

the above site is new one and has 0 PR. this domain is new one.

I have two different view for this two sites.

first I thought that I will create sub domain on the first website something like this us.example1.com to target market in USA. I will set geo graphical location to USA with help of meta tags and webmaster tool.

secondly , I have second domain with country specific domain name( example2.us) . this domain is new one.

so which website I should select to target market in USA and to get appear on first page for the selected keywords which are high competitive.

should I create sub domain on the first site with native language of Germany Or should I focus on new site with 0 Pr and country specific domain name. the keywords are very high competitive.

Please advise me which one Should I prefer..?

admin answers:

It is hard to say depending on the actual name of the pr5 compared to a more targeted name..

It is really more of an opinion for this although a pr5 is always better than nothing.

I would just buy a new domain and pay a little money to optimize it. Pleasing visitors is more important than the search bots. If you need some low cost seo my site has resources for it, and a content feed.

Sharon asks…

Do xml sitemaps need to be installed in Yahoo Site Explorer and Bing as well as Google Webmaster Tools?

I always register and validate my website in Google webmaster tools and submit my sitemap however I never do it for Yahoo and Bing.

Does this only impact on my rankings and indexing for Yahoo and Bing? Or do Google pick up on it as well? I notice if I look my website in Yahoo and Bing I see different meta descriptions than I do in Google.

Obviously Google is the main search engine so I’m not as bothered about the rankings in Yahoo and Bing but If registering and submitting a sitemap with them help increase my rankings I will do…..especially if it affects my Google rankings.

So in a nutshell….does not having a sitemap submitted to Yahoo and Bing affect my overall SEO or just to those search engines?

Many Thanks

admin answers:

You are seeing different metas because the way SEs compile meta snippets may differ. Best way out is to write a custom meta description and kind of take control of what SEs display in SERPs this way you are in control and you can write a pitch type of description compelling users to click through and find out more about your site or whatever it is you offer on there.

Regarding Sitemaps, people will tell you that Sitemaps are great, and another group will tell you that they are worthless. Both are kind of untrue – they do help, in certain conditions.:

- Your site has dynamic content.
- Your site has pages that aren’t easily discovered by Googlebot during the crawl process—for example, pages featuring rich AJAX or images.
- Your site is new and has few links to it. (Googlebot crawls the web by following links from one page to another, so if your site isn’t well linked, it may be hard for us to discover it.)
- Your site has a large archive of content pages that are not well linked to each other, or are not linked at all.

So if you fit into those cases, then why not create a Sitemap for all the search engines that you are targeting.

If you aren’t to techie or if you have a big and dynamically changing site, you may want to take advantage of special tools that create sitemaps and automatically submit them to search engines – Google Yahoo Bing and Ask.com

Linda asks…

Does having .php or /index.html affect your SEO?

I have a couple of websites. They all have sitemaps and are registered with webmaster tools.
A couple of my website domains have .php at the end or .index.html

IE – www.domain.com/index.php

Does this affect my SEO ranking?? or does it not matter? I don’t know if it will affect the Google spider crawling my site.

If it does affect my SEO – how can I rectify this?

Many thanks

admin answers:

Google doesn’t seem to care about these but for users’ sake, for the sake of conformity and as a good practice, it is best to do a redirect

from

www.domain.com/index.php

and

www.domain.com/index.php

to

www.domain.com

In other words, select one URL and stick with it, redirect all others.

Jenny asks…

Video Marketing SEO……………?

I keep hearing about Video marketing and how it is becoming increasingly important for SEO

Can anyone give me more info
How can I start this? What tools are recommended?
Any good website where I can get more info

admin answers:

Make sure users can comment, rate and provide feedback on your videos. Allowing users to provide feedback results in greater views for your video. Users who provide comments are also those who usually take action – these are good people to be engaging in conversations.
Create a video sitemap for all your video content. Search engines can read these well and will easily and quickly index all of your video content. When people use search engines to find videos on particular topics they commonly use the word ‘video’. Make sure you use the words ‘video’ and ‘videos’ in your meta data, description, text and title

William asks…

Recommendations for a great SEO program?

I’m trying to find a highly efficient and reputable SEO (Search Engine Optimizer) for my website. I’d like to improve traffic flow and customers. I’m tired of the marketing schemes that purposely mislead buyers. Are there any software programs that have proven results for increasing web traffic? If so, what are they?

I know the tools provided by Google are effective, but I need a program that goes in-depth and tells me which pages need fixing, which keywords are effective, etc. I’ve researched SEO Suite and IBP, but those also came with negative views.

Software with a consensus on its reliability would be greatly appreciated. If it works, then cost isn’t a factor.

admin answers:

Getting SEO Software? Get ready to learn SEO a-to-z!

If you have already made up your mind about doing SEO yourself with SEO tools, then get ready to learn SEO the way that you’d never have to if you hired an SEO consultant. Note that I am not pitching for consultants here – unless you have a solid referral for an SEO service provider – stay away from them as the risk of being misled (and ripped off) is so much greater than with any SEO tools, even most expensive ones.

Think of it this way: now I am an SEO consultant, now it’s ME who is in charge of my site’s SEO and I need some tools to help me with that. I also need to learn about SEO principles to take full advantage of these tools and make some sort of site promotion strategy (as SEO tools are merely tools, they don’t decide for me – I do).

Getting SEO software? – Make sure you set your expectations right!

Next, if you are already shopping around for SEO software, you will notice that nearly all providers tell you that it will be easy to do SEO with their products and that you will have top rankings very soon.

When you read such stuff, please understand that it is no more than marketing speak. Of course software providers won’t go out and tell you “pal, our tools take time to get used to and you have to spend quite some time learning about SEO”. But that’s the reality – any SEO program that has lots of features demands lots of mental effort on the user’s part – otherwise you end up spending money on a program, miss out on more than half of its features simply because you don’t know how to put them to use. Soon enough you become disillusioned with the program because you aren’t seeing your site ranking #1 for your target search term as the marketing copy promised.

Getting SEO software? – Get ready to invest!

And my last word of advice: good SEO tools are not cheap – get ready to spend if you want results. The key thing to understand is that SEO software is tied to search engine algo’s. And search engines are one of the most complex mechanisms ever created.

The more search engines the tools support, the harder it is to maintain them. Why? Because it’s been tested and documented that search engines change their algorithms approximately 400 times per year. On average, that’s more than one search algo change per day. Multiply by all the search engines that the software supports – and software providers have quite a bit of work to do to keep the software working, and working accurately at that.

So yes, accuracy is the key when it comes to SEO tools, and accurate tools that support various search engines cost quite a bit. Now, they are cheaper than consultant fees but they are far from free.

Also, as you will learn, there are online and desktop SEO programs. There are pros and cons to using either of these but while all online tools have monthly online subscription fees, many desktop tools have them too. Why? Because both cloud and desktop based tools still have to interact with search engines and the upkeep costs to keep this interaction (and accuracy) going are still high hence the monthly fees.

Which brings me to your point on “negative views” – quite a few customers fail to understand that no matter if the tools are online or desktop based, search engine updates are vital for the tools’ accuracy and you have to PAY for this accuracy, each and every month. Owners of of desktop tools seem to get especially irate about such monthly costs and “rebel” when learning they have to pay for them.

So if you are saying that cost is not really a factor, and if you understand the reasoning behind monthly fees, now you are ready to shop. I am almost evangelical when I recommend SEO PowerSuite tools (all desktop based). I honestly think they are great at what they do (keyword research, rank checks, onpage seo and link building): free version to try for as long as you want, paid versions with extensive features and clockwork accuracy (and paid monthly updates), and other bells and whistles. They go above and beyond IBP in many respects: interface/usability, performance speed, features, accuracy, search engine support. Download both and see what I mean.

Also, the “Whats in your SEO toolbox” article listed in the sources has some great software recommendations and brief reviews of each program.

What Questions Should You Be Prepared To Answer When Meeting With An SEO Firm?

A friend of mine is about to sit down with a new SEO company. What questions should he be prepared to answer? I told him to be prepared to answer the following questions in case they ask.
    1. What 6 specific keywords are you trying to rank for?
    2. What keyword string are you trying to rank for? example: Website Design, Content Management Systems
    3. How many years was your domain purchased for? How long have you owned it?
    4. Is your website hosted on a linux or windows server?
    5. Are you familiar with backlinks? Do you know how to build backlinks?
    6. Do you have a Google Webmaster Tools, Yahoo Site Explorer, or Bing Webmaster Center account?
    7. Do you have analytics to track visitors?
    8. Does your current site have a sitemap.xml or robots.txt?
    9. Is your business listed on Yelp?
    10. Do you have any PPC or Adword accounts live sending traffic to your website?

    admin answers:

A good SEO firm won’t need to ask many of the questions that you listed. They’ll run a quick audit of the site before they ever even talk to your friend.

    For example:
    1. They can ask if there are keywords that they are trying to rank for, but a good SEO firm will do the keyword research, not expect your friend to do it. Keyword research is the SEO’s job, not the client’s.
    2. See number 1.
    3. 5 seconds on http://www.domaintools.com/ will answer this question.
    4. Could be relevant, but definitely not a huge concern from an SEO standpoint.
    5. A good SEO firm will explain any lingo they use.
    6. Good question.
    7. Good question.
    8. It takes 5 seconds for an SEO firm to check this manually. The existence of these files is not enough. The contents of these files needs to be verified.
    9. It’s good to be listed on Yelp, but that’s just one of many sites that should be linking back to the client’s site. A good SEO firm should have tools that check backlinks for them. They shouldn’t have to rely on a client’s answer.
    10. Good to know, but not necessary to perform SEO.

If an SEO firm asks your friend any questions that he doesn’t know the answer to, then they should be able to explain in simple terms what they are looking for, and help him find the answers.

    Mandy asks…

Has anyone here used “Scrub The Web” for SEO? Or is there a BETTER company?

I’m seriously thinking about signing up with Scrub the Web dot com for some SEO tips and they also say they can do lots of things. Here’s one that fascinates me (a line from their site):
“(X)HTML Validator™ and Correction Tool – make your Web pages error free! The first SEO inspired (X)HTML validation tool on the Internet. This tool will make every attempt possible to correct (X)HTML errors in your Web page’s (X)HTML source that can affect your search engine visibility.”

I don’t know much about .html, unfortunately, and my little do-it-yourself website has some errors in my source code, apparently…at least according to this free scan I ran on my site. It says I have 31 errors in my site! So I’m thinking OMG! You can see them here:

    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http://landinarizona.net

Could anyone that knows what they’re doing at least tell me if this is something I need to WORRY ABOUT? Everything seems to “look okay” to ME on my site… and I know for sure all the links on it are good. But are these other things listed there bad enough that you think I should do something about them? Could they themselves be hindering my ranking?

THANK YOU SO MUCH for your educated opinion…(said ahead of time to whoever answers that HAS an educated opinion! LOL!) Tell me just how educated IS your educated opinion when you answer, please.
That’s right! Blow your own horn! THANKS AGAIN!

    admin answers:

I don’t have any personal experience with scrub, but I am an SEO consultant – http://kercommunications.com/internet-marketing/seo/
Many of the SEO tips sites do offer good advice, but they usually are steering you toward a pricey contract with them. SEO can be done DIY, but it can be very time consuming and the trial and error process can be frustrating and you would probably be better off consulting a professional. I would also recommend that you find an SEO consultant rather than going to the tips sites so you can get more personalized advice. Consultants can also seem expensive, but the return on investment is usually very good and it frees up your time to concentrate on building or improving other aspects of your business.

As far as xhtml validation goes – this is a tricky area because you do want to make sure your site is set up in a way that will not weigh down your search engine results. However, it seems to be increasingly difficult to maintain w3 compliance. Try to fix as many of the flagged items as you can but don’t lose sleep over it if you only have a few problems and they are related to features you can’t do without – like certain plugins or widgets that are not compliant, but serve an important purpose on your site. Like almost everything else related to SEO, the importance of W3C compliance is debatable. I try to err on the side of caution and keep everything xhtml valid whenever possible.

More important things to concentrate on when doing your own SEO would be the title tag, overall usability and navigation, canonical issues, sitemap.xml, heading tags (H1, H2, H3 etc), and making sure your keyword usage is just right – not “stuffed” but still using the important phrases.

    Hope this helps.

    admin answers:

A single or one time promotion can’t bring promotion to your site in Search engines. Only continue and genuine promotion will give more effective. Do the following promotion as one by one continuously,

    * Directory Submission:
Submit your website url to good and high pr website directories

    * Article Submission:
Write article about your site and distributed to article directories

    * Social Bookmarking:
Bookmark your website pages to social bookmarking sites

    * Social Media Promotion
Write about you website services in blogs, forums, twitter, facebook and other social media and social networking sites

    * Press Release distribution
Write press release about the news and events about your site and distributed it to press release directories.

    * Also you can create ebooks, documents and shared it to document sharing sites.

You can get all the above promotion directory lists by searching through internet. If you feel any difficulties you can hire a SEO company. Before hiring a company please note that they are genuine and do our job as successful Because nowadays there are lot of scam companies(single man team) saying we have 50 peoples working for past 7 years.

All the best for your website promotion. Wish you a Happy Christmas and a prosperous new year.

My question is how much would you pay for such a comprehensive package ? BTW also give me your comments on what else should be included in the package and I’ll see to it.

A little late for the NICHE. I’m not trying to rain on your parade.
Appreciate my candor. There are so many available now, your first hurdle is ranking up there for visibility. But before you do so, do some more homework on competitive price / service analysis; stand alone packages, and various bundled versions of complimenting tools.
A great way is to create your blog, the most effective medium to gain some trust first, definitely an RSS from your site with meaningful tips to drive traffic to your services.

SEO question: is there a way to find backlinks that have acquired by a website in the last xx days?

There are various tools to find the backlinks to a website including yahoo site explorer and some software programs. However, is there a tool that will allow you to identify the backlinks that a site has gained in e.g. the last month?
All these answers are very poor, a total waste of time. The point of the question is not to simply identify backlinks to a site but to identify backlinks that were added RECENTLY e.g. in the last month.

      admin answers:

For seeing the big picture I suggest:

      http://www.google.com/webmasters/

      http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/ (limited free use)

      For specific reports:
      I use Google search.

      Try this example in Google
      Search for > “worthofweb.com” -site:worthofweb.com
(for starters, meaning of this query is, search for “worthofweb.com” -exactly same phrase-, but do not include worthofweb.com pages in the search results)

By this way you can see which sites are talking about you or linking to you without using any programs.

Also click, on the left side, “show search tools” > “past month” or “past week” to filter your search.

For further use, go to Google Alerts and set an alert with this kind of search, then take emails when new results exist.

You know i recently was looking for a tool that would handle the same thing. I checked and played with a lot of the free ones and in the end they could not handle enough of a keyword list to make it easy.

I ended up purchasing a tool called WebCEO after trying the trial. Now i only use the tool to check rankings but it works well for that and it has the increase and decrease of your rankings by word as well from run to run.

Might be worth downloading the trial and see what you think.

Sure it is webceo.com but if not search google for it and you will find it easy enough.

Need cheapest SEO solution, any suggestions?

I’m starting an e-store. Though i have my base of clients whose email addresses I do have, and primarily i’ll be relying on them for my business but I was also wondering if I could reap more by
      SEO?
I tried looking it up to see if I could do it for myself but it seems too complicated.
I’m creating my website from Hostgator(both domain and hosting) and they do have something as SEO in their tools, and it was for hardly $10.00 extra in my package, whereas when I looked up SEO packages online, I got told the cheapest run in hundreds of dollars.
So, to what extent do you think I’ll be doing things from my part in case of hostgator offered SEO?
I don’t want my website to be hardcore SEO‘ized or anything, i don’t want overnight results, i’m ok if it takes time and appears in search results only moderately, not necessarily all the time.
So, I don’t have top notch preferences, if you know what I mean.
In this case, what do you recommend?

      admin answers:

SEO would be a good thing to do to your website. Yes, you can certainly reap more from SEO provided you do it right. Months down the line it will get your a steady stream of visitors (some of whom might become your new clients) so you don’t have to constantly depend on the same clients for your business.

You could do it yourself if you can understand basic things about websites – like web page title (the title up there on your browser’s window bar) for starters. That is not all there is to understand but if you know how you can change that and text and tags in your webpage, then you can do all the basic (and the most important) things yourself. Search for “introduction to SEO” on Yahoo or Google and you’ll find tons of material to read. Spend a weekend to get an idea about what it is.

Now, Hostgator will probably provide you the tools to assess your website’s SEO. Those tools will probably give you statistics of various things about your website, but they won’t implement it. In other words, for example (just an example, this isn’t necessarily true), they could tell you that your “web page title” is search-engine friendly.. But those tools won’t change your web page title for you. Another example, they might tell you how many other websites contain links to your website, but they won’t make other websites carry links to your website. These latter things are the ones which SEO companies do for you. Some even charge in thousands.. Plus they also have a monthly maintenance fees.

If you got weekends to spare and you are a person who can learn things fast (none of it is rocket science, so don’t worry) and implement them for your website and you are not in a hurry to implement SEO on your website, then you can probably take the dive and see if you can do it yourself. It is time consuming but the most important things should be easy to do. Plus, if you have the knowledge of what exactly is it all about, even if you resort to hiring someone for SEO later, you’d understand what they’ve done so they don’t get to dupe you saying they’ve done ‘stuff’ for your website and you don’t understand what they’ve done.

So my recommendation is: search for some “basic SEO” or “SEO tutorial” on search engines and start reading at your leisure. Get a good understanding of the basics. Then try and do some of it yourself. After that you can re-assess if you want to continue doing it yourself (give yourself 6 months) or hire someone to do it for you.

      Hope that helps.

        Paul asks…

          James asks…

What is sufficient and comprehensive enough in a Internet Marketing Package?

I’m in the midst of creating a NICHE, informative, cheap and practical internet marketing package. It includes, how to create your own products, website creation, become master affiliate marketers, proven traffic generation tools, SEO tips, make real money online, etc…

My question is how much would you pay for such a comprehensive package ? BTW also give me your comments on what else should be included in the package and I’ll see to it.

          admin answers:

A little late for the NICHE. I’m not trying to rain on your parade.
Appreciate my candor. There are so many available now, your first hurdle is ranking up there for visibility. But before you do so, do some more homework on competitive price / service analysis; stand alone packages, and various bundled versions of complimenting tools.
A great way is to create your blog, the most effective medium to gain some trust first, definitely an RSS from your site with meaningful tips to drive traffic to your services.
          I wish you the best.

          Nancy asks…

Is there a good tool for tracing google linkbacks for SEO competitive intelliigence purposes? thx?

I understand that it should be possible to analyze competitors’ websites to understand how they have built a high ranking position in Google. I found an older tool from 2006, but given that they haven’t updated their website since, I am sceptical about the quality. Thank you!
