One of the most successful social media network, Facebook is a place of various activities for its users. Facebook is a place where number of users performs different activities hourly basis. There are different applications on Facebook that allows people to interact, gifts to other users. According to the reports, around 70 per cent of the users on Facebook send virtual gifts to their friends on Facebook.
But as per the research done in the recent times, the activities of the social media network have seen a major decline. People are avoiding to do those activities on social media network. Number of applications that are launched on the regular basis has lowered down the interest in Facebook.
The usage of Facebook in June 2011 as compared to that of July 2009 has gone down according to the Global researcher. A decline has been in different activities such as virtual gifting, joining groups, instant messaging, messaging to the friend, new contact search as well as installation of applications. The virtual gifting application on Facebook has declined to 12.9 per cent in United States of America and worldwide it has gone down to 7.5 per cent in the period of two years.
Other activities such as messaging a friend on Facebook have declines to 7.4 per cent all over the world and 14.8 per cent in United States of America. Searching for new contact has declined by 4.5 per cent worldwide and 12.7 per cent in United States. Whereas other activities such as joining new groups, instant messaging as well as installing an application has gone down by 12.8 per cent, 7.5 per cent, 10.4 per cent around the world and 6.5 per cent, 1.5 per cent, 3.1 per cent in the United States of America respectively.
Though there are certain activities that are on the decline side of the Facebook but there are some of the activities also that are on inclining side. Uploading videos is one such activity that has increased by 5 per cent in United States alone and 7.6 per cent worldwide. This helps to know that the Facebook users are using the social media network platform for communication purpose by uploading videos rather than messaging or joining different groups.
According to the executive of Facebook, there has been some changes found from time to time, but it is not correct to say that people have started losing interest in Facebook. The change has been found because there has been less usage of internet during the summer time as compared to other months in the year which is the seasonal concern for the social media network Facebook. The growth has been seen overall with people getting more and more engaged with the website.
According to the other research, the growth in the number of Facebook has increased by 13.4 per cent to 38.6 per cent in the year 2010. It is not only Facebook, but Twitter has also sharing the same platform with increase in the number of users in the coming years as compared to previous years.
